Application Guidelines for 2022 AI2Heal Datathon

Overview

The University of Florida College of Medicine Office of Research Affairs, in partnership with the University of Florida Intelligent Critical Care Center (IC³), is pleased to announce an inaugural funding opportunity for novel, collaborative, and experiential multidisciplinary medical artificial intelligence (AI) research. The AI2Heal Datathon will connect leading AI researchers with clinical and basic researchers to propose new ideas for harnessing AI tools to improve human health.  

In the first annual AI2Heal Datathon, clinical and basic science investigative teams will work with leading AI researchers to develop accelerated medical AI applications using real-world datasets. The Datathon is an interactive catalyst grant award program designed to provide mentorship, support, and resources to generate preliminary data that will support extramural medical AI grant proposals. 

Responsibilities

As a contact PI, you will lead the team’s proposal with direction from your Datathon Theme Leader. You will be responsible for providing timeline, task and responsibility development managing your teams’ deliverables and making assessments of needs to accomplish your goals. Each team will be encouraged to meet once a week to discuss plans and progress to submit the completed application on time by the December 21, 2022 deadline. IC³ Administration will assist in providing meeting space, computing lab resources, or technical support as needed to complete your project. Stipends for graduate students to support trainee work time will be provided if needed. Assistance and funding will be provided by IC³ to recruit AI/ML analysts to assist with project development and completion. A final written pilot funding proposal will be submitted by December 21, extending the conceptual idea first submitted in the letter of intent with preliminary results from the three-month working period. Proposals will be presented during the in-person competition event that will be held on January 12-13, 2023. The in-person, two-day event will consist of (1) a one-day showcase of ongoing AI in Medicine research at UF, followed by opening reception; (2) half day of coding and collaborative documentation; (3) afternoon of team presentations, followed by closing reception and award ceremony. Each team’s final proposal, including preliminary results from the project working period, and in-person presentation will be scored for innovation and significance as well as documentation of algorithms developed. At the conclusion of the event, selected teams will receive $10,000 catalyst awards to continue developing their work into a complete extramural funding application.  

Application Requirements

The IC³ Administration Core uses Microsoft Forms for application intake. You can access the FULL APPLICATION HERE. 

Available for all faculty and staff of the University of Florida, Microsoft Forms will utilize your UFID to access the application and will transmit directly to the Core office.

Format

Font (size, color, type density) and Line Spacing  

We recommend following the NIH guidelines for font size and spacing. Text in your attachments must follow these minimum requirements:  

• Font size: Must be 11 points or larger. Smaller text in figures, graphs, diagrams and charts is acceptable, as long as it is legible when the page is viewed at 100%.  
• Type density: Must be no more than 15 characters per linear inch (including characters and spaces).  
• Line spacing: Must be no more than six lines per vertical inch.  
• Text color: No restriction. Though not required, black or other high-contrast text colors are recommended since they print well and are legible to the largest audience.  

We recommended the following fonts, although other fonts (both serif and non-serif) are acceptable if they meet the above requirements. 

• Arial 
• Georgia 
• Helvetica 
• Palatino Linotype 

Paper Size and Margins

• Use paper size no larger than standard letter paper size (8 ½” x 11”).  
• Provide at least one-half inch margins (½”) – top, bottom, left, and right – for all pages.
